Choosing the right checking account can make a surprising difference in your financial health. While checking accounts seem similar on the surface, the fees attached to them can quietly eat away at your balance if you’re not careful.

 

How to Select a Checking Account?

Not all checking accounts are created equal, and you deserve the best. This useful guide is designed to help you weigh all the options available and find the perfect checking account to meet your needs.

Is it Bad to Have Multiple Checking Accounts?

Having multiple checking accounts can be very useful if you’ve ever struggled with organizing and tracking your spending. Here are the things to consider when you are preparing to open more than one checking account.

1 - APY= Annual Percentage Yield. Must have an Advantage Checking Account to qualify for 3.04% APY. 3.04% APY on balances up to $1,000 and 0.05% APY paid on balances above $1,000. Rates accurate as of 03/01/2026. Must do at least 10 debit card transactions monthly and be enrolled in eStatements to get higher APY on first $1,000. Restrictions apply and rates can change at any time without notice.

2 - Earn $200 for opening your first Community First checking account, completing deposits totaling $1,000 or more that post within the first 90 days of account opening, and making 10 or more qualifying debit card transactions that post within 90 days of account opening. $200 bonus will be credited to the eligible checking account on or around day 91-97 of account opening. When applying online, you must use code FREECHECK to be eligible for this offer. When applying in-person you must mention this offer at time of account opening to be eligible. Promotion is only applicable once per checking account and per member. Members with an existing personal checking account with Community First Credit Union or who have closed a checking account with Community First Credit Union previously are not eligible to participate. In order to receive the reward, the new checking account must remain open and in good standing with a balance ≥$0.01 until the reward is deposited. Reward forfeiture will occur if the checking account is closed prior to the reward being deposited, or the new checking account has a negative available balance at the time of qualification validation. All offers may end at any time without notice.

3 - Some restrictions may apply. Business and specialized accounts are not eligible. Upon enrollment, we will round up your Visa Debit Card purchases to the nearest dollar and transfer the different from your checking account to a Community First savings account of your choice. Members must opt-into Save My Change to enroll and opt-out of Save My Change to end enrollment by completing our online form, contacting us, or visiting a branch. We may cancel or modify the Save My Change service at any time without prior notice.

4 - Members can receive their direct deposits up to two days earlier. No action is required to receive this complementary benefit. Early posting of the direct deposit is contingent upon receiving the funds from the sender. Payment may be delayed.
