Dear Valued Member,

At Community First, we recognize the profound impact we can make when we join forces to address pressing challenges and create opportunities for growth and prosperity. I am excited to tell you about three significant initiatives that demonstrate our commitment to empowering individuals and uplifting our community.

As stewards of financial well-being, we are on a journey to help create positive change across Jacksonville and beyond. These initiatives are not merely endeavors; they are statements of our dedication to serving the diverse needs of our community and extending our reach to those who stand to benefit the most.

$2 Million Commitment to HabiJAX:

We are delighted to announce our partnership with HabiJAX, Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, aimed at assisting low-to-moderate income households in acquiring new, affordable homes. In 2024, Community First has pledged $2 million in mortgage funding for HabiJAX homebuyers.

Through this collaboration, we are offering mortgages with reduced interest rates, complemented by HabiJAX's support in covering closing costs. With just a 1% down payment and contributing "sweat equity" through volunteer work, homebuyers are provided with a path to affordable housing, thereby fostering stronger community ties.

Discover homeownership opportunities through HabiJAX at www.habijax.org/own.

Extension of Monthly Food Giveaway with Schell-Sweet Center:

Renewed for 2024-2025 by the Community First Cares Foundation and the Schell-Sweet Community Resource Center at Edward Waters University, our partnership is expanding this year to address the escalating issue of food insecurity. The initiative includes a year-long food giveaway program, which commenced on April 13, offering groceries to over 175 families monthly. This collaboration engages credit union, community, and university volunteers. Established in 1995, the Schell-Sweet Center provides invaluable assistance in promoting healthy lifestyles. Anchored in our commitment to diversity and inclusion, this initiative aims to support vulnerable residents and foster a more equitable community.

$20,000 in Funding to Merchants at the Melanin Market:

In solidarity with minority-owned businesses, Community First is teaming up with The Melanin Market to allocate $20,000 in funding through 20 $1,000 microgrants to local entrepreneurs. These microgrants alleviate financial constraints associated with business expenses, nurturing the growth and prosperity of minority-owned ventures in Jacksonville.

Our collaboration with The Melanin Market underscores our dedication to advancing economic empowerment and embracing diversity within our community. The first five $1,000 grants will be awarded at the Juneteenth Melanin Market on Saturday, June 15.

We are excited about the transformative impact of these initiatives on our community and invite you to join us in supporting these endeavors. Together, we can effect meaningful change and cultivate a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous community.

Thank you for being an integral part of Community First Credit Union of Florida.

Is it Worth it to Get a Mortgage?

Thinking about taking the plunge into homeownership? It's a big decision, and we're here to help you navigate the pros and cons of having a mortgage.

A mortgage is still considered debt, and your payment could change due to fluctuations in property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, and interest rate if you have an adjustable rate mortgage. From your job security to whether renting might be a better fit, we’ll cover important factors you’ll need to consider.

Kindness in our Community Spotlight

The Community First Cares Foundation is proud to partner with The Schell-Sweet Community Resource Center located at Edward Waters University. As part of our partnership, we provide food to approximately 250 families each month during our food drives. The work they do for our neighborhood is inspirational.

This center provides many services for the community including medical care, social services, wellness education, classes for seniors, veterans’ services and so many more vital community programs.
